The major eye condition that can affect Leonbergers is Hereditary Cataracts.
Cataracts cause blindness in dogs.
This was identified some years ago, and therefore regular testing is required on all stud and dam dogs that are to be used for breeding.
The eyes are tested every year, and the results posted with the BVA (British Veterinary Association). Only dogs that are passed clear each year are allowed to be bred from within the Leonberger Club of GB rules, and this is the posting you will find next to dogs on our and other Leonberger websites that shows the date that they were last tested.
Hereditary Cataracts found amongst Leonbergers are thankfully on the decline mainly due to this practise of screening.
